How to Design an Industrial Electrical Panel?

Industrial electrical panel design requires the right engineering approach for safety, ease of maintenance and long-term system performance.

Designing an industrial electrical panel is not simply a matter of placing equipment into an enclosure. Proper design directly affects system safety, ease of maintenance, energy efficiency and long-term reliability. For this reason, panel design should be evaluated not only electrically, but also mechanically and operationally. The first step is to analyze the application correctly. It must be clearly defined which motors, drives, PLCs, protection devices and field equipment will be used. Factors such as panel size, heat dissipation, power density and future expansion must be planned from the beginning. Otherwise, disorder, overheating or service difficulties may arise inside the panel. Layout design is one of the main factors determining panel quality. Power and control sections should be organized separately as much as possible, cable routing should be planned and easy maintenance access should be ensured. Labeling and terminal organization are also important parts of a professional panel structure. A well-designed panel provides significant time savings for service teams. The selection of protection devices is also an inseparable part of design. Fuses, motor protection circuit breakers, contactors, relays and other components should be chosen not only to function, but to operate safely and in coordination. Short-circuit protection, overload strategy and grounding approach are decisive for panel safety. Ventilation and thermal management should not be ignored either. Especially in panels containing drives, power supplies or high-current equipment, heat accumulation may create serious risk. Where required, fans, filters, ventilation arrangements or proper panel sizing should be planned. Panels with poor thermal design create failures over time. Compliance with standards and operating discipline is highly important in industrial panels. Cable numbering, equipment labeling, schematic structure and maintenance access are not only aesthetic matters but also critical for operational safety. A panel design should remain manageable even after production has started. At Akyıldız Otomasyon, in industrial electrical panel design we consider safety, order, serviceability and sustainability together. Our goal is to create panel systems that not only work, but can also be operated reliably for many years.
